GALLERY|Acton Burnell Castle, Shropshire, 2007
All that remains now of Acton Burnell Castle is the shell of a medieval fortified manor house in Shropshire. It was built of red sandstone, a common building material in the county, by Bishop Burnell, between 1284 and 1293 as his residence, having obtained permission from the King to include crennelations. By around the 1420s the castle had been abandoned. It is now Grade I Listed and is in the care of English Heritage.
Two Parliaments were held here, the one of 1283 being the first in England when the Commons were fully represented in the law-making process. Eventually, after passing down through the family line, the land was confiscated by Henry VII and then granted to Thomas Howard, 2nd Duke of Norfolk.
