GALLERY|Powis Castle, 2015

Unlike many other castles in the Welsh Marches which were built to subdue the Welsh, Powis (near Welshpool) was built in the late 13th century as the fortress and mansion for a dynasty of Welsh princes.

It has been periodically bought and sold, repaired, restored and refurbished through the centuries, and is now in the care of the National Trust. The latest works were carried out for the 4th Earl of Powis (d.1952).

Powis Castle is renowned for its peacocks which strut around the extensive Baroque gardens including the terraces with their famous yews, often trimmed into abstract shapes.
