GALLERY|Stoke-on-Trent, 2016

Stoke-on-Trent is a federation of six towns in North Staffordshire. The other five are Hanley, the main commercial centre, Tunstall, Burslem, Fenton and Longton. Collectively known as The Potteries, these towns have been the home of the English pottery industry since the seventeenth century. World famous producers have included names such as Royal Doulton, Spode, Wedgwood and Minton.

Although the Portmeirion Pottery now has a thriving business here, most of the great pottery factories have closed and Stoke is in the unfortunate position of so many places, like the former coal-mining and steel towns, that once depended on a single major industry.
