Gallery|Hampton Court 2008

This is one of great royal palaces, redeveloped for Cardinal Wolsey in 1515, later seized and enlarged by Henry VIII from 1529 following Wolsey's falling out of favour. It became one of Henry's favourite residences.

During the 17th century William III's huge rebuilding and expansion project, intended to rival Versailles, demolished much of the earlier Tudor building. When work was discontinued in 1694 the architecture was left as part domestic Tudor and part Baroque. George II was the last monarch to live here.
